Date & Time

Information

Join us as Mr. Tom Rasmussen discusses the post-war politics of Gainesville icon James Longstreet.

After the Civil War, General James Longstreet cooperated with the victorious Federal Government during reconstruction. His goal was to influence how Reconstruction policies were implemented. Longstreet also accepted that the days of slavery were over and that whites should encourage moderate, responsible leadership among the newly freed African Americans. Few white southerners agreed with Longstreet in the post-war years. But, by the 1970s the ideas espoused by of James Longstreet had finally taken hold and most Americans believed that harmonious relations between south and north, and between people of all races, were desirable.
