Join us on Tuesday, May 13th at 7:00 PM for The Big Cat: The Life of Johnny Mize, an inspiring story of the legendary baseball hall of famer. Johnny Mize was born and raised in Habersham County, hamlet of Demorest, Georgia. A local schoolboy and athletic legend, he began a professional career in sports at the age of 17.
Jerry Grillo, author of The Life of Baseball Hall of Famer Johnny Mize, will share how Mize's career began in Latin America, then to the minor leagues, before beginning his 15-year big league career with the Cardinals, the New York Giants, and the New York Yankees.
Free for Members, $5 for non-Members.

Join us at the Northeast Georgia History Center on Saturday, May 17th as we kick off a special Family Day event, “An Introduction to Falconry.” Our friends from Georgia Mountain Falconry will be on hand to explain all aspects of this historical sport to big bird fans of all ages. Delve into the origins of the sport, the training of the birds, their care and feeding and much, much more. Get an up-close and personal look at a wide variety of raptors including hawks, owls, falcons, and even a Golden Eagle! Learn from the experts as members of Georgia Mountain Falconry will share their knowledge and firsthand experiences regarding the sport.
While visiting the History Center, be sure to visit our exhibit halls, tour the historical White Path Cabin, and enjoy the quiet and beauty of the American Freedom Garden.
The event will begin at 10:00 AM and last until 2:00 PM. Admission is $8.00 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-10, free for children 5 and under and to History Center members.

Join us at the Northeast Georgia History Center during our last Homeschool Day of the season! May’s Homeschool Day, Appalachian Heritage, will be Thursday, May 22nd from 10 AM to 1 PM. Regular admission for non-Members, free for Members.
At 11:30 AM, we’ll have a storyteller of Appalachian tales. This program will be indoors.
Ongoing activities include:
- Learn about Appalachian daily life, including cooking, cleaning, and maintaining a home in the nineteenth century.
- Join our musicians in a jam session, or listen in on some traditional folk music.
- Hear about the special herbs and foods that are grown throughout the region.
- Participate in an Appalachian-themed scavenger hunt.
- Watch a special clogging demonstration and join in the fun.
- See real Appalachian artifacts and talk with our archivist on staff.
- Find out more about White Path, the Pinsons, and the Cooleys – all previous owners of our eighteenth-century cabin.
- Make and take home your own corn husk doll.
- Learn about making clothes of the period with the Fiber Arts Guild.
- Watch a demonstration of pottery being made.
- Make your own pottery with the purchase of a $5 craft ticket.
