Homeschool Day: The Railroad and the 1936 Gainesville Tornado

Thursday, April 16th 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM

Join us this April as we explore the expansion of Railroads into North Georgia and commemorate the 90th anniversary of the 1936 Gainesville Tornado.

Students will explore the expansion of railroads and discover how they changed North Georgia, in addition to learning about the history of the 1936 Gainesville Tornado. This hands-on program encourages critical thinking, understanding of basic engineering and remembrance of local history.

USO Dance & Desserts Fundraiser Event

April 30th, 2026 | 7-9pm |Gainesville Civic Center Ballroom

Dust off your Lindy dresses & Victory Suits and polish your saddle shoes! On Thursday, April 30th, 2026, the Gainesville Civic Center will transform into a 1940s-era canteen for USO Dance and Desserts. This nostalgic evening serves as a dual fundraiser for our community: The Northeast Georgia History Center and Gainesville’s own 14-year-old Caleb Schneider, the first ever Youth Ambassador for Tours of Duty.

Remembering our 32nd: President Franklin D. Roosevelt

With Special Guest Speaker: Dr. Ben Wynne

Dr. Wynne will discuss Franklin Roosevelt’s pre-war presidency in the context of his visit to Gainesville after the devastating 1936 tornado. Included will be an overview of Roosevelt’s rise to the nation’s highest office, the origins of some of his New Deal programs, and a treatment of the deadly tornado and its aftermath.

There will be a Question and Answer session with our guest speaker at the end of the presentation.

Old Time Music Slow Jam Session, with Foothills Fiddles and Frets | Every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the Month

(Starting January, 2026)

Be part of an Appalachian tradition! Starting in January, Foothills Fiddles and Frets will host Old Time Music Slow Jam Sessions at the Northeast Georgia History Center in Gainesville from 2-4 PM on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

Fiddlers, guitarists, banjo, ukulele, string bass and dulcimer players are invited to play traditional Old Time music at a beginner’s level tempo. For more information, contact Stephanie Gordon at 678-936-1057 or stephcascader@gmail.com.

New Permanent Exhibit Opening!

Threads of Sacrifice: Stories from Northeast Georgia

Opening November 11th of 2025, this new permanent exhibit honors the men and women of Northeast Georgia who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. Through uniforms, letters, photographs, and personal stories, visitors will explore how global conflicts shaped our local community.

In honor of Veterans Day, we’re offering free admission for all veterans on November 11th. Join us as we dedicate this new space to the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of our region’s heroes.

We are thankful to those family members who have donated time, artifacts, or given us the funding to make this exhibit happen. We can’t wait to share it with you!
