Moving Forward Through Changes and Challenges

As the Northeast Georgia History Center celebrates its 20th year at Brenau University, we reflect on our journey amid ongoing changes. Today, we provide an update on our leadership. Greg Payne, our Executive Director, has stepped down, and we express appreciation for his contributions both in his role and as a dedicated volunteer. Libba Beaucham now serves as our Interim Executive Director, and we are grateful to her team, Marie, Lesley, Sophie, Andrews, Jessy, and Jennifer, for their dedication to seamlessly continuing the mission and programming of the Northeast Georgia History Center.

In celebrating two decades at Brenau University, we also reflect on our evolution since our inception in 1981 as the Georgia Mountains Museum. The vision of John Jacobs, Sr. and James Mathis, Sr., who led the formation of the Georgia Mountains Museum, has materialized through our profound impact on the Gainesville community and Northeast Georgia.

Over the years, we've witnessed substantial growth in visitation, membership, outreach, and connection through our diverse programs, including field trips, homeschool days, lectures, and digital programs supported by the Ada Mae Ivester Education Center.

In 2023, we had over 7,000 visitors to the museum from walk-in visits, educational programs, and special events.

Our Digital Studio outreach has grown significantly since its inception in 2017. As of 2023, we have conducted 365 Time Travel Adventures for schools across Georgia reaching over 20,000 students! Our podcast Then Again continues to rise in popularity with 13,000 listens in 2023 bringing fascinating local, national, and world history topics to listeners across Georgia and beyond.

Gainesville Reads has provided free one-on-one tutoring in literacy for over 70 local elementary-grade students. We’ve seen significant progress with our students and are so proud of the confidence they have gained in reading. Gainesville Reads recently received an anonymous contribution of $25,000 to continue this phenomenal work in the community.

Testimonials from our community highlight the impact of our programs in bringing history to life and fostering deeper understanding:

“It’s a joy to visit a place where history is so approachable, touchable, and alive.”

“Students from every class that I’ve participated in the Time Travel Adventures thoroughly enjoyed them and talked about what they learned long after the program! They are always impressed seeing the musket shooting and learning all the cool medical details from the Civil War nurse. It’s an experience that no textbook or even a video can evenly match!”

“Without Gainesville Reads, I don't know how we would have done it. Our kid going from below grade level reading to now on level is huge.”

Our efforts to preserve and share our region’s history have seen great progress in our archives and exhibits. Lesley Jones, our Director of Archives & Curation, has overseen significant efforts to properly store and catalog our vast collection of artifacts, while recent updates to our exhibits enhance the visitor experience for children and adults alike.

The American Freedom Garden remains a beautiful tribute to US veterans and has been utilized in our educational events to connect young folks to the stories and experiences of our veterans.

In the coming months, we will be sharing reflections on the last 20 years at Brenau University as well as memories of our time as the Georgia Mountains Museum. We invite you to share in our celebration by attending our events and supporting the Northeast Georgia History Center however you can.

Volunteer of the Month:
Dr. Caroline Sutton Clark

Our Volunteer of the Month is Dr. Caroline Sutton Clark! Caroline has volunteered for our special events and field trips for over a year now. Caroline brings her experience as an educator and her passion for learning to every program!

“Volunteering at the Northeast Georgia History Center is where my passion for history, especially local stories, finds its home. As someone with a PhD and a background in arts education, I’m so impressed by the Center's creative educational programs, especially those geared towards children, and facilitating scavenger hunts in the galleries is my favorite job so far. I learn something new every day! It's all about the thrill of discovery and adventure, and seeing kids light up with excitement as they explore history in a hands-on way. But, there’s something extra special about seeing their parents and grandparents get enthusiastic too, telling stories about growing up in Northeast Georgia. The staff's organization and thoughtfulness make each day run smoothly, and working alongside other volunteers is a great way to meet people.”

Volunteer of the Month: Justin Osborne

Our Volunteer of the Month is Justin Osborne! Justin has volunteered for our special events and field trips for over a year now. He has been a joy to work with and his passion for education and history shines through.

“My interest and love for history is something that came from my studies as a young boy and continues to this day. My knowledge of history expanded after the death of my grandfather, a WW2 Veteran, and upon receiving his flag. My knowledge has grown over the years to include many other conflicts. Both of my uncles have served in the military, one having served in Vietnam and the other one having served 24 years in the US Army infantry. Hearing their stories has created a desire to learn more about our nation’s past and to teach it to younger generations. I have really enjoyed volunteering at the Northeast Georgia History Center over the past year. This allows me to serve the community of Gainesville and teach something that I love. ” - Justin Osborne

Many expect medieval people to have visions of saints, but what about the ghosts of the ordinary people? Dr. Greene will share a series of ghost stories written in the later Middle Ages about medieval encounters with spirits, reanimated corpses, and even a ghostly seal.

“Future Historian” Theme Featured in Museum Shop

During the month of October, we’re highlighting a great selection of items for folks of all ages who are interested in exploring their own family history and local history.

Stop by in person or shop online!

  • With extensive examples from both historical and social science literature, this book is a practical guide to methods of recording oral history. The author provides suggestions on a range of techniques from developing a written interview guide and using tape recorders to asking probing questions during in-depth interviews and editing transcriptions. She also covers the ethical and legal issues involved in conducting life-history interviews and elaborates on three different types of oral history projects: community studies, biographies and family histories.

  • Award-winning author Kathleen Krull takes an in-depth historical look at immigration in America—with remarkable stories of some of the immigrants who helped build this country.

With its rich historical text, fascinating sidebars about many immigrants throughout time, an extensive source list and timeline, as well as captivating photos, American Immigration will become a go-to resource for every child, teacher, and librarian discussing the complex history of immigration.

America is a nation of immigrants. People have come to the United States from around the world seeking a better life and more opportunities, and our country would not be what it is today without their contributions.

From writers like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, to scientists like Albert Einstein, to innovators like Elon Musk, this book honors the immigrants who have changed the way we think, eat, and live. Their stories serve as powerful reminders of the progress we’ve made, and the work that is still left to be done.

  • "First there were the blue mountains, animals, then those humans we named "Indians." Next Spanish conquistadors and other European explorers; travelers and military scouts; white settlers on muddy, stump-strewn, rocky trails; bearded, curing gold prospectors; war and iron horses; summer visitors, the telegraph, graded roads, moonshiners and the radio. A transformation of 450 years..." (pg.1).

In this brief history of Northeast Georgia, author Carroll Proctor Scruggs explores the complex history of Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun, towns, Union, and White Counties.

  • Though little more than an afterthought these days, from the 1890s through the 1920s, postcards were by far the most popular means of communication.

Many of the postcards produced during this "golden age" can be considered works of art, when postcard photographers traveled the nation coast to coast snapping photographs of busy street scenes, documenting local landmarks, and taking photographic portraits of locals only too happy to pose for the camera. This fascinating history of Northeast Georgia showcases more than 200 of the best vintage postcards available; these images, printed as postcards and sold in general stores across the country, can teach us important aspects of yesteryear that we may not find in history books.

New Executive Director Announced!

The Northeast Georgia History Center is excited to announce the appointment of Greg Payne, M.B.A., as its new Executive Director. With a passion for history and an extensive leadership and project management background, Greg is poised to steer the History Center into its next chapter of growth and community engagement.

Raised in the historically rich region of Northern Virginia, Greg's enthusiasm for history was ignited at an early age. “I was fortunate to grow up where I did, surrounded by as much American History as I was. It was through great teachers, musems, and books that I found a passion for history and how history can be used to connect people not just to the past but within their present communities as well.” adds Greg. Greg’s academic journey culminated with a Bachelor of Science in History from Portland State University and an M.B.A. from East Carolina University.

Professionally, Greg has showcased exemplary leadership in roles such as Senior Project Manager at Descartes Systems and Services Project Manager at Manhattan Associates. His experience managing multiple customer implementation projects, collaborating with diverse teams, and mentoring team members speaks to his ability to lead and inspire. His tenure at UPS in Corporate Transportation and IT Solutions further underscores his adeptness in strategic planning, project execution, and stakeholder communication.

Beyond his corporate journey, Greg's commitment to community shines through. Before accepting the position, Greg was a dedicated volunteer with the History Center and has held leadership roles in organizations like Toastmasters and the Boy Scouts of America. Greg is also the host of his original Cool Grandpa podcast which offers insights and resources for grandparents to connect with their grandchildren.

"We’re all so grateful to have Greg on the team,” says Libba Beaucham, who acted as Interim Executive Director and is now Director of Operations. “It was an honor and a rewarding experience to be Interim Executive Director, but we really needed someone with Greg’s skill set, experience, and strategic approach to fully realize our potential. Being a fellow history nerd, Greg also understands the value we offer to the community. I’m really looking forward to learning from Greg and working with him as a team leader!”

As the Northeast Georgia History Center continues its mission to connect people with the past, the addition of Greg Payne to its leadership team marks a promising new era, especially as the museum will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024.

Summer Highlights at the History Center

The Living Museum: Our newly updated exhibits came to life to showcase the history of North Georiga during our first ever Family Night: The Living Museum!

Chautauqua: Our theme for our Summer Chautauqua series this year was Founders of Georiga. We heard from General Oglethorpe, Mary Musgrove, and Major-General Nathanael Greene and learned about the impact they had upon the colony and state of Georgia.

Historic Fashion Show: Our second annual historic fashion show, Promenade, focused on fashions from the 18th century that were popular in America and Europe. Thanks to our volunteer cast of historical costumers and models, our guests were able to see over 30 examples of ensembles ranging from 1730-1790. We had one guest in particular, Hazel, who made our day as much as we made hers. Hazel developed an interest in 18th-century fashion over the summer and had been studying it intently when she learned of the fashion show at the History Center focusing on her area of study. Hazel raised the money to buy herself a VIP ticket to the show, and all of the models enjoyed getting to meet her during the reception. Hazel even joined the models of the Duke of Kent's Waltz!

Summer Camp Field Trips: We had several summer camp groups visit for our Early American Daily Life program where students learn about life on a homestead, participate in historic skills like corn grinding, learn traditional folk dances, play with historic toys, and enjoy historic demonstrations like blacksmithing and open-fire cooking!

Sautee Nacoochee Visit: The team enjoyed visiting Sautee Nachoochee last month and touring the Sautee Nachoochee Center, History Museum, Folk Pottery Museum, and African-American Heritage Cabin. They enjoyed getting to meet the staff and Board Members of these cultural institutions and see their work in the community!

Hopewell Farms Visit: Libba & Marie had the pleasure of visiting Hopewell Farms with owner Phil Bonelli and family! Hopewell Farms uses regenerative farming practices that improve the health of the land and livestock without the use of chemical pesticides. Many of these practices are rooted in historical agricultural practices. We look forward to hosting Phil on our podcast soon to share his family's work and story!

Volunteer of the Month: Rev. Bennett Clough

We’re starting a new Volunteer of the Month article for our newsletter to honor our wonderful community of volunteers. This month we are honoring Reverand Bennett Clough who has volunteered for our family and homeschool events for over a year now. Most recently, Bennett offered his great skills as a speaker and his deep knowledge of the history of Methodism in Georgia for our Founding of Georgia Homeschool Day.

"I love volunteering at the History Center because our volunteers strive to tell stories of the generations that have come before us. They make the rich history of our state come alive in many unique presentations that are accessible to a wide range of people. I am proud to be a part of what goes on here!” Rev. Bennett Clough

We look forward to honoring more of our great volunteers in future newsletters. To learn more about becoming a volunteer, visit www.negahc.org/volunteer.
