Early American Daily Life Program

Experience the past in real-time with historic demonstrations and activities to learn about daily American life in the 18th and 19th centuries. Enter the historic White Path Cabin, once home to Cherokee leader Nunna-tsune-ga “White Path,” play with historic toys and games like hoop trundling and cup-and-ball, watch a blacksmithing demonstration in the Hoyt Herrin Blacksmith Shop, and explore artifacts during an Exhibit Scavenger Hunt.

    Blacksmithing demonstration with our Resident Blacksmith Steven Bartlett in the Hoyt Herrin Blacksmith Shop*

    *Contingent on availability. May be replaced with candle dipping activity.

    The Frances Mathis and Phil Mathis Folk Art Gallery with pottery by the renowned potter and ceramic craftsman Lanier Meaders

    The N.C. White Photography Gallery highlighting beautiful portraits spanning the 1880s to the 1950s from the N.C. White & Son Photography Studio. This father-and-son studio was once located on Main Street in downtown Gainesville.

    American Freedom Garden

    Enjoy the beauty of the American Freedom Garden, a tribute to veterans of the 20th and 21st centuries, among nature and twenty-four Georgia granite pillars honoring Veterans and their families from World War I to the present day.

  • We have a gift shop with a variety of kid-friendly souvenirs, books, historic toys, and more.

  • This program includes a Resource Guide with activities, vocabulary, worksheets, and sources to continue your learning.

  • We have a large parking lot that can accommodate school bus parking.

  • Must be booked at least two weeks in advance.

    Student tours require a 1:10 ratio of chaperones to students. Chaperones pay tour admission and must remain with the tour group. Teachers and Bus Drivers are admitted for free.
