Travel Trunks

Travel Trunks are like a "museum in a box" filled with artifacts, primary sources, and GSE-based lessons plans that offer a hands-on experience for your students. Travel Trunks can be rented for $35 per week. Use the online form below or email info@negahc.org to schedule your pick up.

Please Note: You must be able to pick up and return the travel trunk to the History Center located at 322 Academy Street NE Gainesville, GA 30501.

Native American Cultures

Explore 10,000 years of Native American history from the early Mississippian cultures to the Cherokee and Creek tribes of the Southeast. Items include a traditional style Cherokee basket, drum, gourd rattle, deerskin, kid-friendly blow gun and dart, and illustrated books on Native American culture and history.

Revolution to Removal

Learn all about Colonial Georgia, its path to statehood after the American War for Independence, and the impact of settlement on the lands of Indigenous tribes that led to Indian Removal on the “Trail of Tears.” Items include a canvas haversack with period games and toys, a powder horn, replica coins, quill pens and an ink stand, brass kettle, period clothing articles, and illustrated books.

American Civil War

The American Civil War has many stories to tell: those of the enslaved, those that fought, those that protected the homefront, and those that governed. This trunk provides a full view of the war in Georgia including the institution of slavery, the soldier’s experience, new technologies developed during wartime, medical advancements, the role of women, and the social reforms after the war. Items include articles of replica period clothing, a soldier haversack with a hygiene items and meal utensils, a canteen, music CD, and books with period photographs an illustrations.

World War II

This trunk introduces students to World War II from a Georgia perspective. Students will learn about the experiences of soldiers, sailors, nurses, and “Rosies” on working in factories on the homefront. Items include: an M1 helmet, gas mask bag, canteen, mess kit, replica posters and media from the period, and books covering a variety of experiences with photographs and illustrations.
