Forum: Medievalism in the American South
Tuesday, April 8th at 7:00 PM
Did you know that in the twelfth century, a Welsh noble named Madoc sailed across the Atlantic and discovered the Americas? He didn't, of course. He probably never existed. But you can find the commemoration of his journey in both America and Wales. The persistence of this story is an example of "medievalism" - the use of the medieval past, however inaccurate, to help understand the contemporary world. In this talk, learn about the places of Madoc legend in the historical context of the colonization and settlement of the southeastern part of the United States.
Presented by Dr. Thomas Greene, Associate Professor at the University of North Georgia. Dr. Greene is a historian of the European early Middle Ages, specializing in Carolingian monasticism and the history of emotions.
Free for Members; $5 for non-Members.
