History Center Highlights
Christmas Open House: We had a very merry time during our Open House before the Christmas on Green Street Parade! Thank you to everyone who stopped by to join in carols, enjoy some treats, and explore our exhibits and historic structures. A big thank you to Downtown Gainesville for all the hard work that went into creating another wonderful day of joy and community in Gainesville!
Field Trips: We’ve had great field trips with school groups! Students have met General James Oglethorpe and Mary Musgrove at her trading post, tried on and learned about Colonial era fashions and textiles, and enjoyed our exhibit scavenger hunt. Our educational programs offer students memorable experiences that engage their curiosity and connect history to their own lives.
Autumn Frolic: We had a fun time during our Autumn Frolic program with dancing, live music, a blacksmith demonstration, games, and more! We were even able to help a Girl Scout Troupe earn their "Playing with the Past" badge.
Homeschool Day: Our Harvest on the Homestead Homeschool Day invited visitors to learn about harvest traditions and historic skills. Visitors enjoyed churning butter, grinding corn, learning traditional dances with Atlanta Historic Dance, meeting Cherry the Chicken, making corn husk dolls, and taking home great educational resources from The Learning Sprout.
Forum: Ronda Sanders, Genealogy and Local History Librarian for the Hall County Library System, shared a wonderful pictorial history of Gainesville during our November Forum with highlights from the library’s photography archive.
Volunteer of the Month:
Dr. Caroline Sutton Clark
Our Volunteer of the Month is Dr. Caroline Sutton Clark! Caroline has volunteered for our special events and field trips for over a year now. Caroline brings her experience as an educator and her passion for learning to every program!
“Volunteering at the Northeast Georgia History Center is where my passion for history, especially local stories, finds its home. As someone with a PhD and a background in arts education, I’m so impressed by the Center's creative educational programs, especially those geared towards children, and facilitating scavenger hunts in the galleries is my favorite job so far. I learn something new every day! It's all about the thrill of discovery and adventure, and seeing kids light up with excitement as they explore history in a hands-on way. But, there’s something extra special about seeing their parents and grandparents get enthusiastic too, telling stories about growing up in Northeast Georgia. The staff's organization and thoughtfulness make each day run smoothly, and working alongside other volunteers is a great way to meet people.”
